What is a rising sign?
Your rising sign, also called your ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact minute and place you were born. It marks the start of your first house, and astrologers read it as your outward style: how you come across, how you react at first and how you begin new things.
Because it depends on the minute and the place, two people born on the same day can have different rising signs. That is one reason a full chart says far more than a Sun sign alone.
How do I find my rising sign?
To find your rising sign you need your exact birth time and the place you were born, because the sign on the horizon changes every one to three hours. Enter your date, time and city in the calculator above and it works out your ascendant to the minute of arc.
Your result also shows the window your rising sign held on your birthday, for example "Gemini rising holds for births from 7:59 am to 9:51 am that day". If your recorded time sits within 15 minutes of a change, you will see a note naming the sign on the other side, so you know whether to double-check your birth certificate.
Why does the rising sign change so quickly?
The rising sign changes quickly because the Earth spins once a day, carrying all twelve signs past the eastern horizon in about 24 hours. On average that is one sign every two hours, but the real time depends on the sign and on how far you were born from the equator.
At Appleton's latitude, Aries and Pisces each rise in about 66 minutes, while Leo, Virgo, Libra and Scorpio take about 2 hours 37 minutes. In the southern hemisphere the pattern flips, and the quick signs become the slow ones. If you were born while a quick sign was rising, a few minutes on the clock matter more.
What is the difference between my rising sign and my Sun sign?
Your Sun sign describes who you are at your core, while your rising sign describes how you come across and how you start things. Think of the Sun as the engine and the rising sign as the front door: people meet the door first.
A Capricorn Sun with Sagittarius rising, for example, may strike new acquaintances as easygoing and adventurous, while friends know the steady, ambitious person underneath.
Can I find my rising sign without a birth time?
Not exactly, but a rough birth time narrows it down a lot. Tick "I don't know my birth time" and choose a window such as morning or evening, and the calculator lists every rising sign in that window with the times each one held.
A window of a couple of hours often leaves only one or two possibilities. If you are still unsure, the birth time section of our guide explains where to find the time, starting with the long-form birth certificate.
What is my chart ruler?
Your chart ruler is the planet that rules your rising sign, and astrologers treat it as a guide to your whole chart. Its sign and house show where your attention naturally goes, and your results name it for you.

Questions people ask
Is the ascendant the same as the rising sign?
Yes. The ascendant is the exact degree of the zodiac on the eastern horizon when you were born, and the sign it falls in is your rising sign.
Can my rising sign change during my life?
No. Your birth chart is fixed to the minute you were born, so your rising sign stays the same. A different result usually means a different birth time or time zone was entered.
How exact does my birth time need to be?
Within about 15 minutes is enough for most people. If your time sits close to a change, the results warn you and name the other possible sign.
What does my rising sign say about me?
It describes the way you meet the world: your first impression, your instinctive reactions and the style you bring to new situations. Your Sun and Moon signs describe what sits underneath.
