What is a birth chart?

A birth chart, also called a natal chart, is a map of where the Sun, the Moon and the planets were at the exact minute you were born, as seen from the place you were born. Astrologers read it as a portrait of your temperament: what drives you, what you need and the parts of life where those themes play out.

A sample chart for April 12, 1990, 8:30 am, Appleton, Wisconsin. The numbers mark the parts explained below.

Every chart is built from the same five parts: the zodiac signs (1), the planets (2), the houses (3), the angles (4) and the aspects (5). Once you know what each one does, any chart becomes readable.

Is a natal chart the same as a birth chart?

Yes. Natal comes from the Latin word for birth, so a natal chart and a birth chart are the same thing. Older books also call it a nativity or a horoscope, a word that first meant the chart itself rather than a daily forecast.

Is a birth chart the same as a star chart?

Not quite. An astronomer's star chart maps the constellations, while an astrology birth chart tracks the planets against twelve equal signs measured from the spring equinox. People do say "star chart astrology" for a birth chart, and they mean the same map of the planets described here.

What are the parts of a birth chart?

The planets: what part of you

Each planet stands for one part of your personality. Astrologers call all ten "planets" for convenience, even though the Sun is a star and the Moon is a moon.

SymbolPlanetWhat it represents
SunYour core self and sense of purpose
MoonYour feelings, needs and instincts
MercuryHow you think, learn and talk
VenusLove, values and what you find beautiful
MarsDrive, desire and how you act
JupiterGrowth, luck and generosity
SaturnDiscipline, limits and maturity
UranusChange, freedom and originality
NeptuneDreams, ideals and intuition
PlutoPower, depth and renewal
North NodeThe North Node: the direction you are growing toward

The signs: how it behaves

The twelve signs describe style. Each has an element, which sets its temperament, and a mode, which sets how it handles change.

The houses: where it shows up

The twelve houses divide the chart into areas of life, from self and money in the first two houses to friends and inner life in the last two. Houses need an accurate birth time. Our guide to the 12 astrology houses covers each one.

The angles: your horizon and meridian

The Ascendant (AC), on the left, is your rising sign, and the Midheaven (MC), near the top, is where the zodiac crossed the meridian at your birth. They move fast, so they are the most personal points in the chart. You can find them with the rising sign calculator and the Midheaven calculator.

What are aspects in a birth chart?

Aspects are meaningful angles between two planets, drawn as lines across the middle of the chart. They show which parts of you work together and which pull against each other.

The five major aspects drawn on small circles: conjunction at 0 degrees, sextile at 60, square at 90, trine at 120 and opposition at 180
The five major aspects and the angle each one measures.
SymbolAspectAngleWhat it means
Conjunction0°Two planets blend and act as one
Sextile60°An easy opening that rewards effort
Square90°Friction that pushes you to act and grow
Trine120°A natural, easy flow of talent
Opposition180°A pull between two sides that asks for balance

An aspect is strongest when the angle is exact and fades as it widens. The allowed gap is called the orb, and astrologers usually give conjunctions and oppositions the most room.

How do you read a birth chart, step by step?

Read a birth chart from the general to the specific: the Big Three, then the chart ruler, the houses, the aspects and the patterns. Here is the sample chart above, for April 12, 1990, at 8:30 am in Appleton, Wisconsin, read in five steps.

  1. Start with the Big Three. This person has the Sun in Aries, the Moon in Scorpio and Gemini rising: bold at the core, intense in private and chatty when meeting people.
  2. Find the chart ruler. Gemini is ruled by Mercury, which sits in Taurus in the 12th house. A quick-talking first impression rests on a slower, more private thinker.
  3. See which houses are busy. The 10th house holds Venus and Mars, so career and public life get attention. The Sun and Mercury in the 12th suggest someone who recharges alone.
  4. Read the tightest aspects. The closest is Mercury square the Midheaven, within half a degree: ideas and career push against each other until they line up. The Moon sits close to Pluto, which deepens the Scorpio Moon's intensity.
  5. Notice the patterns. Saturn, Uranus and Neptune make a stellium in Capricorn, which everyone born around 1990 shares. Earth signs lead the element count, adding practicality.

Your own chart follows the same order. The birth chart calculator lays out each step for you, from your Big Three to your tightest aspects.

What is a birth chart reading?

A birth chart reading is an interpretation of your chart, either written, like the free reading this site gives, or spoken by an astrologer in a session. A written reading explains each placement clearly. A live reading adds what only conversation can: weighing the chart against your actual life and questions.

What do you need to make your birth chart?

You need your date of birth, your exact time of birth and the city where you were born. The time matters most for the rising sign and houses, which change every few minutes. If you don't know it, the calculator shows what is certain and what could change.

Questions people ask

What does my birth chart mean?

It describes your temperament through the positions of the planets at your birth: who you are at your core, what you need and where those themes appear in your life. Start with your Sun, Moon and rising signs.

How do I read my birth chart for free?

Enter your birth details in the free birth chart calculator. It explains every placement in plain English and switches to an astrologer view with degrees and aspects.

Why does my chart look different on another site?

Usually because of a different house system, zodiac or time zone. This site uses Placidus houses and the tropical zodiac by default, and you can switch both in the astrologer view.

Can a birth chart predict the future?

A birth chart describes tendencies rather than events. Forecasting uses separate techniques, such as transits, that compare today's sky with your chart.
