What is a stellium in astrology?

A stellium is a group of three or more planets in the same sign or the same house of your birth chart. It concentrates energy in one place, so that sign or area of life becomes a major theme in your life.

How do I know if I have a stellium?

Enter your birth date, time and place in the calculator above. It counts the ten planets, from the Sun to Pluto, in every sign and every house, and lists any group of three or more. Your birth time is needed for houses; without it, the calculator checks signs only.

What counts as a stellium?

Most astrologers count three or more planets in one sign or one house, and some insist on four. The calculator uses three and counts the Sun, the Moon and the planets from Mercury to Pluto. It leaves out the lunar nodes and the angles, which are points rather than bodies.

How common is a stellium?

More common than most people expect. Between 1950 and 2030, three or more planets shared a sign on about two days in three, largely because the slow outer planets spend years close together. Four or more in one sign happened on about one day in five.

So a stellium made only of Uranus, Neptune and Pluto is shared by everyone born in those years. Stelliums that include the Sun, the Moon or a personal planet, or that fall in a house, are the ones astrologers read as personal.

What is the difference between a stellium in a sign and in a house?

A stellium in a sign colors your personality with that sign's style, while a stellium in a house shows the area of life where a lot happens. A Virgo stellium, for example, suggests a careful, detail-minded nature, while a 10th house stellium suggests a life that revolves around work and reputation.

How do you read a stellium?

  1. Find the sign or house. It sets the theme.
  2. Look at which planets are in it. The Sun, Moon or chart ruler in a stellium make it central to who you are.
  3. Check the empty side of the chart. A big stellium often means other areas take conscious effort.

Your results list each stellium with its planets, show how many planets fall in every sign and house, and highlight the stellium on your chart wheel.

Questions people ask

Is a stellium good or bad?

Neither. It gives focus and intensity to one part of your chart, which can be a great strength, along with a tendency to overdo that theme.

Does the North Node count in a stellium?

Most astrologers don't count it, because the node is a point rather than a planet. The calculator leaves it out.

Can I have more than one stellium?

Yes. A chart can have a stellium in a sign and another in a house, or two in different signs. The calculator lists all of them.
