What are my Sun, Moon and rising signs?

Your Sun sign is the sign the Sun was in when you were born, your Moon sign is where the Moon was at that moment, and your rising sign is the sign that was coming up over the eastern horizon. Astrologers call the three together your Big Three, because they shape most of what a chart says about you.

Three nested rings: the rising sign on the outside as how you come across, the Sun in the middle as your core self, and the Moon at the center as your emotional needs
The Big Three, from the outside in: how you come across, who you are and what you need.
  • Sun sign: your core self, your sense of purpose and what gives you energy.
  • Moon sign: your emotional needs, your instincts and what helps you feel safe.
  • Rising sign: how you come across to people, your first reactions and how you start things.

How do I find my Big Three?

You need three details: your date of birth, your exact time of birth and the city where you were born. The calculator above turns them into all three signs at once:

  1. Enter your date of birth. That alone fixes your Sun sign, except on the day the Sun changes signs.
  2. Add your birth time. Use the time on your birth certificate; the long-form copy usually has it.
  3. Choose your birth city. The calculator uses it for the time zone and for the angle of your horizon.
  4. Press Calculate. Your results show each sign, what it means and how long your rising sign held on your birthday.

The Sun sign needs only your date, the Moon sign needs your date and usually your time, and the rising sign needs your exact time and place.

Why does my rising sign need an exact birth time?

Your rising sign changes roughly every two hours, because the turning Earth carries all twelve signs past the eastern horizon in a single day. Some signs pass faster than others: in Appleton, Wisconsin, Aries and Pisces each rise in about 66 minutes, while Leo, Virgo, Libra and Scorpio take about 2 hours 37 minutes.

That is why the results show the exact window your rising sign covers and warn you when your time sits within 15 minutes of a change. The rising sign calculator goes into this in more detail.

How do you read your Big Three together?

Read them as one personality with three layers: the Sun is what drives you, the Moon is what you need to feel all right, and the rising sign is the way you meet the world. None of them cancels the others out.

Take someone with an Aries Sun, a Scorpio Moon and Gemini rising. They might come across as quick and talkative, feel things intensely in private and run on a deep need to start things and win. When two of the three signs share an element, that quality usually stands out: two water signs, for example, make feelings hard to ignore.

Your results open with a one-line summary that puts the three together, then explain each sign on its own.

Can I find my Big Three without a birth time?

You can find your Sun sign and usually your Moon sign without a birth time, but not your rising sign. The Moon changes sign during the day on about 44 days in 100, so on those days the calculator shows both possible Moon signs and the clock time the Moon switched.

Tick "I don't know my birth time" and pick a rough window. You will see every rising sign that falls inside it, with the times each one held. If you can narrow your birth to a couple of hours, that is often enough to settle it. Our guide to finding your birth time lists where to look.

Questions people ask

What is my big 3 in astrology?

Your big 3 are your Sun sign, Moon sign and rising sign. Together they describe your core self, your emotional needs and the way you come across, which is why astrologers usually start a reading with them.

Which matters more, my Sun sign or my rising sign?

Neither wins outright. Your Sun sign describes who you are underneath, and your rising sign describes how you show up and start things, so people who meet you briefly often notice your rising sign first.

Is the rising sign the same as the ascendant?

Yes. Rising sign and ascendant mean the same thing: the sign on the eastern horizon at the minute you were born. Astrologers write it as AC or ASC on a chart.

Why is my Big Three different on another site?

Usually because of the time zone, a slightly different birth time or a different zodiac. Vedic sites use the sidereal zodiac, which sits about 24 degrees behind the tropical one used here, so most signs move back by one.
